The Manufacturing Pipeline – Upstream and Downstream
The production of plasma derivatives is a massive industrial undertaking that requires thousands of liters of plasma to produce a single batch of medicine.
The Two Streams of Sourcing
Recovered Plasma: Obtained from whole blood donations where the plasma is separated from red cells after collection.
Source Plasma: Collected via plasmapheresis, where a machine separates the plasma and immediately returns the red cells to the donor. This allows donors to give plasma much more frequently (up to twice a week in some countries).
