Bimodal Hearing and Bilateral Implants
Many patients have different levels of hearing in each ear, leading to different device configurations.
Bimodal Hearing: Using a cochlear implant in one ear and a traditional hearing aid in the other. This allows the brain to combine the clarity of the implant with the more natural, low-frequency sounds of the hearing aid.
Bilateral Implantation: Having an implant in both ears. This significantly improves "localization" (knowing where sound is coming from) and the ability to understand speech in noisy environments, such as restaurants.
